In our today's class, we have learned about 'Deductive Teaching Strategy'. Deductive teaching strategy is just the opposite to Inductive teaching strategy. Deductive teaching strategy is the strategy that leads the students from unknown to known, abstract to concrete or complex to simple. Sir gave us some notes about:
Purposes of deductive teaching strategy
It is a teacher centered approach.
  1. It creates dependency in students limiting their thinking ability.
  2. It is basically used to help students with learning disability to enhance their learning.
Phases of deductive teaching strategy
Presentation of abstraction.
  1. Teacher illustrates it with examples.
  2. Student give examples of concepts and apply them in new situations.
  3. Student restate the concept or definition that they have learned.

Advantages of deductive strategy

  1. It is less time consuming.
  2. It is different from role learning as it is a strategy where logical interlinking of the elements is encouraged.
  3. Most of the school materials/curriculum can be easily taught through deductive strategy.
  4. This method involves all levels of questions.

Disadvantages of deductive strategy

  1. Students are not actively involved in the beginning of the lesson.
  2. Since it is a teacher centered approach, it may not be challenging for the brighter students.

In pair we were asked to share what we have understood from our previous lesson and spended some time in discussing about it. After that, we all discussed about procedural steps by Inductive teaching or learning strategy which includes:

  1. Open ended: Here the teacher will give some examples and non examples of a particular topic.
  2. Convergent: By making sentence, the students will try to identify the pattern of the given examples.
  3. Closure: The students will try 2 make definition of a particular topic by using some examples.
  4. Application: Here they will combine the definition and will exchange the knowledge.

After discussing about the four phases, we were asked to think of two topics that we can teach inductively. One topic should be from IT and another from English. In groups, we chose two relevant topics under which we can teach inductively. We wrote the steps to teach that topic in our groups and after doing that we pasted our charts on the wall. We moved around to see each others work. Lastly sir gave us some feed backs and comments.

In our home group, each member presented on their own topic which was discussed in our expert group. We learned from each other, asked questions and clarified our doubts from which we are able to learn more and understand better. I came to know the concept of Inductive teaching under which there were two types of teaching. After that we talked about some proposes of Inductive teaching. When we came to the topic ‘Procedural steps of Inductive teaching/learning strategy’, it was quite confusing and I had a hard time understanding it. It was because there were many phases under this topic. But somehow after asking questions and all, I understood it better. I also understood what a teacher should be like and the role of a teacher. Lastly we talked about the merits and demerits of the strategy.

From our home group, we were again divided into another group known as an expert group. There were six sub topics under Inductive Teaching strategy. Each group was provided with one sub topic.Sir gave us one hour to search information on a particular topic and to prepare a presentation. After that we went to our home group and started doing our presentation. It was a new idea or an activity that I have experienced in my life. We were able to learn more when we worked in a group.

Questions

Differences between teaching strategy, teaching method and teaching skill.

Teaching strategy is the action to be taken by the students to reach the objectives. For example, reading the information to the students, allowing them to research the information themselves and presenting information in power point.

Teaching method is the way the teacher approaches the students. For example, doing classroom experiments are activities where any number of students work in groups and can have cooperative learning.

Teaching skill is the ability or knowledge to explain something to someone. For example, being a teacher we should have good classroom management skills. If we lack in that skill, we can't enhance proper learning.

What are some of the characteristics of an effective teacher?

  • Set rules, consequences and rewards immediately.

  • Determine the learning style of our student.

  • An effective teacher should have a good classroom management skills.

  • Establish a loving/caring/warm atmosphere in the classroom.

  • Take a personal interest in each student.

  • Conduct thorough instructional planning/organizing.

Second Reflection (8/3/2012)

On the second day of our EDN 205's class, we discussed about the meanings of five different words which were strategy, method, skill, technique and approach. We were looking and talking about those words relating to teaching. We focused more on method and approach because they were quite similar to each other. And we also came to know that skill and technique were also similar to each other. It did helped us to know and understand their meanings which were very important for all of us.

First Reflection (6/3/2012)

The first day of the class started with the meditation lesson. I think meditation can wipe away the day's stress, bringing with it inner peace and we have also seen how we can easily learn to practice meditation whenever we need it most.

After that we did a new style of introducing each other which was suggested by our sir. And being a teacher we should always look forward to new styles and different ways of doing everything.
